Description
The Horizontal Mud Gas Separator forms an integral part of the well-control system, playing a vital role in maintaining safe rig operations. Commonly known as a Poorboy Degasser, it is positioned on or near the drill floor, downstream of the buffer block on the choke and kill manifold. As a safety-critical component of the well-control equipment, the MGS operates in conjunction with the choke manifold to safely circulate gas kicks out of the well.
Designed to manage a high concentration of mud solids, the Horizontal Mud Gas Separator may encounter hydrate plugging due to gas expansion at the choke. A liquid seal ensures that separated gas is vented safely, preventing any breakthrough into the mud tanks. Our design follows established process practices while incorporating the latest industry guidelines and publications.
For drilling rigs requiring a more compact configuration, Kapwell offers the option of using the trip tank as a liquid seal or an external U-tube arrangement. Both vertical and horizontal variants are available, each equipped with internal baffles and distribution nozzles. The effectiveness of the liquid seal depends on the selected design features.
The capacity of the Horizontal Mud Gas Separator varies by design. If the capacity is exceeded, there is a risk of liquid mud or oil droplets entering the vent line. More critically, gas may bypass the U-tube seal and reach the shale shaker house, posing a significant risk of explosion or fire. It is therefore essential to confirm that the system can handle the maximum expected volumes of gas and fluid in the event of a severe well kick.
Our technology offers the highest level of safety during mud and gas processing.
Kapwell-certified Mud Gas Separator can handle a high proportion of mud solids and may experience hydrate plugging as a result of gas expansion through the choke. The liquid seal ensures that separated gas vents safely without breaking through to the mud tanks. The design of our Mud Gas Separator is based on client specification or ABS CDS requirement or conventional process practice and latest notices and publications.
