Product Overview

High-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) drilling operations require the use of robust overboard gas handling systems equipped with pressure/temperature sensors, alarm systems, and other critical features. The Kapwell Mud Gas Separator is built specifically for HPHT hot mud loop systems and meets or exceeds all relevant specifications.

The Mud Gas Separator (Poorboy Degasser) forms part of the well control system and plays a critical role in ensuring the safe operation of the rig. It is typically located on or near the drill floor, downstream of the buffer block on the choke and kill manifold. Employed as a safety-critical component of Well Control Equipment, the MGS is used in series with the choke manifold to safely circulate out a gas kick from the well.

If the drilling rig requires a compact solution, Kapwell can offer a trip tank-based liquid seal, where the trip tank functions as the liquid seal, or alternatively, the seal may be implemented using an external U-tube. We can supply either vertical or horizontal MGS models, both of which are fitted with internal baffles and distribution nozzles. However, the performance of the liquid seal depends on the selected design features.

The capacity of the MGS depends on its design. If that capacity is exceeded, liquid mud or oil droplets may be carried through the vent line. More critically, gas may bypass the U-tube (liquid seal) and enter the shale shaker house, posing a potential explosion and fire hazard. It is essential to verify that the system can handle the maximum volume of fluid and gas that may be produced by the well during a severe kick.
